The Khovanov homology of knots

Abstract

A few years ago M.Khovanov introduced a homology theory associated with a knot. The homology group turns out to be bigraded. Khovanov proved that if we take the Poincare polynomial with respect to one grading and the Euler characteristic with respect to another one then the polynomial obtained turns out to be the Jones polynomial of the knot. Therefore, one may consider the Khovanov homology as a categorification of the Jones polynomial. In my talk I am going to describe the construction of the Khovanov homology.
