Word-hyperbolic
groups were introduced by Gromov in the 80's and have had an
extraordinary impact on the study of infinite groups. We will define
word-hyperbolic groups, many of their fundamental properties, and a
variety of examples. The talk will be self-contained and aimed
especially at students who we hope might benefit from the material.
