Department of Statistics and Operations Research
The Department of Statistics and Operations Research includes 12 faculty members with a broad range of interests.
The department carries out an extensive research program with a mix of theory and applications. Active areas of research include statistical theory and methods, operations research, probability and stochastic processes, mathematical models in biology, game theory and mathematical economics. Faculty members are engaged in scientific collaborations with partners from computer science, medicine, economics, biology, physics, engineering, psychology and other fields. Many of the research projects carried out in the department have been supported by grants, both from Israeli and foreign sources.
The researchers in the department maintain a worldwide network of colleagues, many of whom visit the department frequently to attend workshops, symposia and seminars. Additional information on our research work can be found under the subject headings and in the individual faculty profiles.
The department operates a Statistical Consulting Lab that serves researchers from inside and outside the university.

Study Programs
Study programs in Statistics and Operations Research are available at the undergraduate, M. Sc. and Ph. D. levels. There are currently about 80 students working on their first degree, 50 Masters students and 15 Doctoral students. The department offers a variety of undergraduate programs. Students may take a single major in statistics and OR or a joint major with another subject. The single major program provides students with a broad background in statistics and OR, along with a strong background in mathematics. The joint major program enables students to combine an excellent background in quantitative methods with study in a second discipline. Common second majors include economics, business, computer science and psychology. Students in mathematics can also elect either statistics or operations research as an area of concentration.
NEWS! The double major program with Computer Science has been improved and is likely to enjoy favorable admissions criteria.
Four M. Sc. programs are available, one in Operations Research and three in Statistics: 1. Applied Statistics; 2. Biostatistics; and 3. Probability and and Theoretical Statistics.
Most full-time graduate students receive financial support as research assistants, teaching assistants or graders.
Our graduates find jobs as professionals in industry, financial institutions, hi-tech and bi-tech companies, government offices, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and research units.
Many teach in colleges and others work as private consultants.
The Statistical Consulting Unit
The Statistical Consulting Unit provides expert statistical consulting in the areas of planning and design of experiments and analyzing research data. The Consulting Unit works with university researchers in many fields, including Medical research and clinical trials, Biology, Bioinformatics, Meteorology, Business, Marketing, Engineering and the Behavioral Sciences.
The Statistical Consulting Unit offers services for both small and large scale projects, serving individual and organizations within the major hospitals, government organizations and private companies.
The Statistical Consulting Unit staff includes professional statisticians, graduate students and senior faculty members.
We are located at Schreiber building in room 110
