On a new characterization of the Shannon entropy
Abstract:
A function J from finite state ergodic processes to a
metric space is said to be FINITELY OBSERVABLE if there
is a sequence of functions g_n(x_1, x_2, ...,x_n) which
for every ergodic process {X_i}, converges almost surely
to J({X_i}). Such a FO function is an invariant of
finitary isomorphism if and only if it is a continuous function
of the Shannon entropy of the process. (joint work with D. Ornstein)
