David Erschler (erschler@post.tau.ac.il).
Office Hours: Tuesday 15.00-16.00 research authority shed room 3 ("tzrifim near rashut ha'mehkar").

Prerequisites:

Linear Algebra 1, Calculus 1 (hedva 1 or infi 1). Very recommended to take linear algebra 2 in parallel.

Homework:

You will normally get a homework assingment once a week (in the "tirgul" class). Turning homework in is NOT mandatory, however it is strongly recommended as a necessary condition for succeeding in the course.

Syllabus:

This is an introductory course in geometry. The name Analytic Geometry is to a great extent misleading since the course has very little to do with what is commonly called in highschools analytic geometry.

Main Topics:

Recommended books.

I do not know of a single book in Hebrew that deals with the material of this course. Even in English there aren't too many books on this subject that assume only knowledge of linear algebra and "infi". Again, most of the books called "analytic geometry" are NOT suitable. Here are two books that can be found in the library and may be of use: Roe's book has a considerable intersection with the material of the course and is not hard to read. Berger's book is much harded since it assumes much more preliminary knowledge. I recommend it mainly for students who are interested to learn things beyond the material covered in class.

Both books are in "shamur" status in the library.

Video.

There exist video cassetes of the course (taught by me), recorded during Fall semester 2000. You can watch them either in the library or on the web via Tel-Aviv University's video server. For the latter just go to http://video.tau.ac.il, click on "List Videos" etc. As far as I understand this will work well only if you do it from one of the computers on campus.

Announcements.
