Non-critical Analysis of Modern Kerosene Movement
Kerosinka is stepping through the planet...
A comprehensive list of almost 200 former Kerosinschiks and even some Kerosinka pro-
fessors is in front of me. Quite a phenomenal list, should I say. I wouldn't like to hold you
much longer from a temptation to turn over this page and dig into familiar names, here are
just some of rather interesting points a curious mind can get from browsing through a jam of
sometimes yet unknown and sometimes already almost forgotten places, faces and "peis"es.
- In its urge to conquer the world, Kero-community easily won the battle with the universities
of the West. Even most famous and prestigious of them reluctantly accepted
Kerosinschiks in their classrooms, labs and offices (and even tolerate them till now (-: ).
Judge yourself: Harvard and Yale, Princeton and Columbia, NYU and Berkeley, Uni-
versity of Chicago and Boston University, CalTech and Technion, Tel-Aviv University
and Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Weizmann Institute and Sorbonne, University of
Sydney and ... Second Moscow Medical Institute! (If you think that this is the full
list, c'mon, I've just took the cream, I haven't even touched Ohio State and Wash-
ington University of St. Louis (-: ). So far, nobody reported Kerosinschiks in Oxford
and Cambridge, but as we are delegating our glorious editor-in-chief to University of
Bristol, it's shouldn't be that far from there. So, the toughest place for a Kerosinschik
to get into remains Moscow State University.
- As the programming part of Kero-community doesn't yield to the scientific one in num-
ber, it was quite interesting to observe the vivid correlation between the geographical
region and the level of appreciation Kerosinka alumni gained from major software
publishing houses. Really, most of software giants of American West were delinquently
negligent to let Kerosinschiks to penetrate into their staff. Again, just the cream:
Microsoft [The Greatest], Borland [The Die-Harder], Informix, and even the Western
branches of the Eastern giants, like Xerox. On the contrary, on their own territory
the Eastern ones are much more cautious, and we haven't heard about Kerosinschiks
in IBM, DEC and their cohort (though, someone may note that no smart Kerosin-
schik would like to be on a leaking ship). Thus, our programming Kero-brethren of
American East mostly concentrated in hi-tech companies (mid- and small-sized) and
financial institutions.
- Interesting and not seen before diversification of current occupation of Kerosinschiks is
taking place. Among usual "student of mathematics/computer science", "researcher",
"programmer", "software engineer", you will occasionally find something unexpected:
like medical student, for example, and at least one Kerosinschik described the current
occupation as millionair (the Editorial staff is all curious in what currency and we
sincerely wish that not in leaky Russian roubles).
- Do you know where on the globe is the most dynamic (in demographic sense) Kero-
community? You may be surprised, but in Australia. In the two last years since the first
Kerosinka Yellow Pages surfaced, the number of Kerosinka alumni in Australia more
than doubled (even close to tripled), and there are rumors that others are following
the lead and are getting ready to immigrate (or already migrate?) from the Holy Land
to the Land of Kangaroos.
... and goes into cyberspace
At first, I'd like to note that without modern magic of e-mail we wouldn't be able to
prepare this edition. All communications between our editors were done solely via electronic
media. Plus, being given enormous task of collecting information about American part of
Kerosinka alumni in a really short term, the only tactic I could choose was e-mail broadcast
of a request to participate. Honestly, I was overwhelmed by the response that exceeded my
expectations at least twice. Thank you all who overcome the usual "laziness simplisitat"
and promptly responded to the call.
Second, being so much encouraged by difficult but successful birth of this exciting edition,
we decided to make Kerosinka Yellow Pages available on-line!!! This document will serve as
a basis and will be converted into a convenient hypertext form in HTML format, so that it
would be browsable by Mosaic or any other WWW viewer. Eventually, the document can be
extended with photographs, forms for interactive addition and update of information, etc.
Any ideas for possible evolution and/or volunteers are welcome. The only current problem is
to find a nice place where we could put it so that it would be freely accessible by Kero-netters
all around the clock as it spread through many continents and time zones.
Yuri Salkinder (PM-81), Editor
of "Kerosene Yellow Pages".
