Restriction of eigenfunctions and representation theory

Abstract:
I will consider analytic properties of eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami
equation on a compact hyperbolic surface. I will show how to deduce a uniform lower
bound for the norm of the restriction to a fixed closed geodesic. The proof I present is
based on methods in representation theory, and, in particular, on the use of the unique
trilinear invariant functional on representations of GL(2,R). Such a functional will play
a role of a (quantification of) pseudo-fifferential calculus.  (Joint with J. Bernstein, A. Gosh, P. Sarnak)
