The talk is focused on the topological methods to the classification of complex
algebraic curves and surfaces and on the search of invariants of the classification.
A special attention will be paid to the braid monodromy factorization algorithm,
computation of fundamental groups, and degeneration of surfaces, which all will be
illustrated by examples.
