In my talk I will outline some foundations of log geometry and then discuss
applications
to some moduli questions, where one seeks for a natural modular compactification
of a classical moduli space. It might well be the case that no natural modular
compactification
exists, but we will see that the situation improves if one considers functors
represented by log schemes.
