"...by natural selection our mind has adapted itself to the conditions of the external world. It has adopted the geometry most advantageous to the species or, in other words, the most convenient. Geometry is not true, it is advantageous." Henri Poincaré (1854 to 1912)  from ``Science and Method".

     סילבוס:

The course is devoted to undergraduate mathematics and physics students. Its purpose is to give an elementary introduction into basic geometric ideas which play an important role in various branches of the modern mathematics, and have interesting links to physics. The topics of the course include ( Note: this is only tentative and might change):
1. Isometries of the Euclidean space. Discrete groups of isometries
of the plane. Surfaces: torus, the Mobius band, the Klein bottle. .

2. Crystallographic restriction

3. Platonic Solids. The Euler formula via spherical geometry.

4. Isometries, complex numbers and quaternions.

5. Linear fractional transformations (Mobius transformations)

6. Basic notions of Riemannian geometry : length, distance, geodesics.

7. Hyperbolic plane (the Poincare model). Geodesics and isometries.
Elementary hyperbolic geometry. The axiom of parallels revisited.

8. Transformations of Galileo and Lorentz. The Minkowski space and relativity.

9. Pseudo-sphere and other models of the hyperbolic plane.

10. Discrete groups of hyperbolic isometries. Fundamental regions. The modular group.
11. Projective Geometry. Desargues' theorem, Pappus theorem, and the fundamental theorem of projective geometry.
